Morocco has appointed its first female prime minister, with King Mohammed VI naming Fatima Ezzahra El Mansouri to lead the formation of a new government.
The appointment followed parliamentary elections in which her Authenticity and Modernity Party won the largest number of seats.
El Mansouri, a lawyer who previously served as mayor of Marrakech and housing minister, must now negotiate a governing coalition and present her cabinet for royal approval.
Her administration will face demands for jobs and economic improvements while overseeing major preparations for Morocco’s role in hosting the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
