The police in Lagos on Thursday, arraigned eighty-three men who allegedly raided, destroyed and looted the Shoprite outlets in Sangotedo and Surulere, Lagos State.
Those arraigned before Yaba Chief Magistrate’s Court, Lagos, are: Jude Atuamya, Kazeem Kamiru, Reuben Johnson, Mohammed Abdul waheb and eighty others.
They were arraigned on charges bordering on six counts of conspiracy, stealing and wilful and unlawful damage.
The offences they all pleaded not guilty to.
The prosecutor, Mr. Cyril Ejiofor leading others from the State Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Department (SCIID), Panti-Yaba, said that the defendants committed the offences on September 3, at Shoprite Surulere and Sangotedo, Ajah-Lagos.
The Prosecutor told the court that the defendants had conducted themselves in a manner likely to cause breach of the peace by wilfully setting fire to the malls and damaging property worth N500 million.
The prosecutor further told the court that the efendants were also involved in riotous acts, looting spree and harming passers-by.
The offences according to the prosecution contravened Sections 50, 287, 339, 341 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The presiding Chief Magistrate, Mr. Philip A. Ojo granted the defendants bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties each in like sum who must be their parents.
Chief Magistrate Ojo also ordered that in the case where by their parents of the defendants are deceased, the surety must be a family member from their paternal side.
He has adjourned until October 9, while ordered that the defendants be remanded in prison custody pending the fulfilment of the bail terms.
