Maduka Okoye, the goalkeeper for Udinese and the Nigerian national team, has received a two-month suspension from the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) following a significant betting scandal associated with a match against Lazio during the 2023/2024 season, as reported by Shybellmedia Sports.
The 24-year-old goalkeeper was found guilty of sporting misconduct after allegations surfaced that he intentionally sought a yellow card during the league game against Lazio. This suspicious booking initiated an investigation into unusual betting patterns connected to the incident. The FIGC has stated that Okoye was accused of deliberately engaging in actions that led to his caution, thereby seeking to manipulate betting outcomes.

This case has reignited concerns regarding player integrity and the increasing influence of illegal betting syndicates within professional football. Following a comprehensive disciplinary inquiry, the National Federal Tribunal of the FIGC confirmed on Tuesday that Okoye would serve a two-month suspension from all official matches, commencing with the first official game of the 2025/2026 season.
In a statement issued by the Disciplinary Section of the National Federal Tribunal, it was declared, “The National Federal Tribunal, Disciplinary Section, definitively ruling, imposes on Mr. Emil Maduka Okoye the sanction of two (2) months of disqualification in official matches, starting from the beginning of the first official competition of the 2025/2026 sporting season.” As a result of this ruling, Okoye will miss six competitive matches, including Udinese’s season opener in the Coppa Italia against Carrarese on August 18, as well as the first five fixtures of the Serie A.
Okoye will be eligible for selection again on October 19, when Udinese faces the newly promoted Cremonese away from home. The ruling has generated discussions across both Italy and Nigeria, particularly considering Okoye’s previous role as a key player for the national team. Additionally, it raises further scrutiny regarding the conduct of players involved in recent betting-related controversies.
Despite his prior status as Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper and his participation in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, Okoye has encountered difficulties in regaining his peak performance level and has faced criticism for inconsistent displays. The suspension may further complicate his efforts to secure a regular starting position at both the club and international levels.
