Itanna, the corporate venture capital platform ofHoneywell Group, has officiallyannounced thelaunch of thesecondeditionofits acceleratorand investmentprogramme.As communicated when it launched its first accelerator programme in 2018,Itanna’s objective is tostimulate economic growthin Africabyinvesting andsupportingtech-enabled,for-profit startupsto scale up.Itannaalsoaims toignite enterpriseby championing disruptive technology and promotingentrepreneurial talentthrough acceleration, investment, networking and mentorships.
Fourstartupshave been selected for the second accelerator programmefrom over 200 applications receivedacrossnineAfricancountries.ThefourstartupsselectedforItanna’s second acceleratorprogrammeare:Gerocare,a company that leverages technologyand traditional African family values of adult children taking care of their parents to provide a structure for medical care for the elderly;SimbiInteractive,which usesinteractive questioning and answering to help students learn, master and evaluate themselves in any subject;E-Estates,a mobile/web solution that helps estate managers coordinate their affairs and interaction with residents effectively; and, finally,Carido,an on-demand automobile service technology platformthataggregates automobile maintenance demands through mobile devices and thereafter facilitates their fulfillment through select competent and credible service providers.These startups would receive investmentsto the tune of thirty thousand US dollars($30,000)from Itanna.
These startups willalsohave the opportunity topitch to Honeywell Group’s network ofdomesticand international investors ataDemo Dayto be organised at the end of theprogramme.
Speaking aboutthe second acceleratorprogramme, Executive Director, Honeywell Group,Obafemi Otudekosaid, “givenHoneywell Group’sfive-decadehistory ofestablishing thriving, world classbusinesses, Itanna isanother avenue forthe Group to further create value by helpingstartups to transform intoimpact-making,profitable andsocially relevantbusinesses.”
On the success ofItanna’s maiden accelerator programme in 2018,Head of Innovation and Sustainability,Honeywell Group and Director, Itanna,Tomi Otudekosaid, “the success of the firstprogrammehas encouragedtheteam tofurtherinvestin promisingstartups.” On the specific progress recorded by the startups from last year, Tomi Otudeko said: “Accounteer, providers of online accounting services for SMEs, have expanded into other African markets including Ghana and Kenya.Powercube, providers of affordable power supply using renewable energy, have closed one investment round to fund theirproduction and deployment activities.Finally,TradeBuza, an online platform for managing and brokering commodities sourcing and outgrower scheme, has grownitsuser numbers by over 100%and haslauncheditscommodities trade service to help linkoutgrowerschemes to a network ofofftakers.”
Also speaking onhow the cohorts for the 2019 accelerator programmewere selected,Tony Idugboe,Vice PresidentandHead of Investments at Itanna,noted thatthe four startups for the second editionwere selected because they had recorded significant traction from their inception till date.He saidareview of the companies’trajectory and theirrespectivemarket growth ratesshowed that they were uniquely positioned toexpandand acquiremoremarket share over the next few years.Finally, hesaidallthestartups have management teamsthathavethe ability to drive execution of the companies’individualobjectives.
