Affectionately known as “Big George” by family, friends, and fans, he was best known as a championship boxer. Foreman won the heavyweight gold medal at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics and captured his first heavyweight championship as a professional in 1973 by defeating Joe Frazier in Jamaica. This fight is famously remembered for Howard Cosell’s legendary call: “Down goes Frazier!”

In 1974, he faced Muhammad Ali in a match famously dubbed “The Rumble in the Jungle.” Foreman suffered the first loss of his career as a heavy favorite in Zaire, where he lost the title to Ali via an eighth-round knockout. This fight was one of the most-watched televised events in history and helped establish Ali’s reputation as “The Greatest.”

May his soul rest in peace.
